Dark Mornings

Is it just me or is everyone else having trouble waking now the dark mornings have arrived?

Then dark evenings too. I keep thinking its about 8pm and its only half four!

Anyhow I was stuck for what to blog about and then remembered this old poem my Mum used to quote to me when I was a kid and wanted to lie in bed. Its only recently I came across the whole poem in a magazine so cut it out and kept it for old times sake.

Anyone else heard it? My guess it's one of those poems the old school marm's you to drill in to young scholars heads and my poor mother had been brainwashed into remembering it.

Morning

The lark is up to meet the sun,

The bee is on the wing,

The ant her labour has begun,

The woods with music ring.

Shall birds and bees and ants be wise,

While I my moments waste?

Oh, let me with the morning rise,

And to my duties haste.

Why should I sleep till beams of morn

Their light and glory shed?

Immortal beings were not born

To waste their time in bed.

Jane Taylor (1783-1824)

Dark days of winter are surely upon us. I've had to use our central heating for an hour or two on the coldest evenings (something i hate doing as I don't like the resulting gas bill), the draft excluder is behind the front door, the thick curtains are shaken out and ready to put up in the lounge and extra blankets are on the bed. Instead of a bottom sheet I'm using a huge furry fleece blanket and we even take fur throws to bed on cold nights. Oh yes and we wear (un)sexy bed socks ;-)
Haven't got as far as wearing a hat in bed yet (like wee willie winkie) but if the gas and electric go up again its a step I might have to take LOL.
So, how are you preparing for winter?

I've got the opposite problem. The sun rising before 5am and waking me up. I love the winter mornings when it's so easy to sleep in because once I'm awake, that's it, there's nothing I can do to get back to sleep even if I'm tired as buggery. But I'm to lazy to actually get up and use the time wisely.

Now I'm cold! You gave me the shivers!

We are getting by here in the south of France with jumpers and a log fire. Most of our friends have central heating and think our house is very cold, but it's better for our budget, the environment and our health this way...

Dark morning are awful now that I have been off work for a few weeks
I'm finding it impossible to get up for work. Roll on spring.
Thankyou for sharing the poem.

This morning I woke up and thought it was Saturday! How upsetting to realise I still had another day at work to go!

I've dragged my thick french vintage blanket out of the airing cupboard and it's now keeping me warm at night!

I'm dreadful in the cold and my mum can never understand how i can sleep with so many clothes on!!!

I'm having the same problem as you - it's been dark for hours and it's still only early evening - gah, I hate that. I don't have quite such a problem with the dark mornings, although I do keep waking up and thinking 'why are the blooming neighbours revving their car engines in the middle of the night.' Only to find it's about 6.30 am.

I've got a print of that picture - Flaming June - in my living room. I just love it, it really captures the slumberous days of high summer heat.

A lovely poem. I am finding it harder and harder to get up these cold mornings!

What a lovely poem to wake up to. My grandma used to sing me "Mr. Sandman" to wake me up! With regards to keeping warm, we use flannel sheets when the weather turns cold, it really makes a difference getting into the bed with cosy sheets. And of course, a large eiderdown! I snuggle my dog alot too...

It has been a very long wait for spring, but our clocks have gone forward weeks ago, but it is still quite cold in the morning as I hang the washing out before going to work. We are all hoping for a long hot summer which has been forecast but it's been slow arriving this year. I"ll think of you in the Northern Hemisphere, when it starts getting really warm but truth to tell Autumn is my favourite season.
